First Light Ontario - Canada's First Fully-Active Solar PV Energy Park |
 |
|
 |
First Light I earned the distinction of "Canada’s 2009 Solar PV Project of the Year for Ground Mount" by CanSIA, the leading solar association in Canada.
The first fully-operational, utility-scale photovoltaic facility in Canada, First Light I is a 9.1 megawatt solar project located in Stone Mills, Ontario, mid-way between Ottawa and Toronto. This project, developed under a joint venture between SunEdison and SkyPower Limited, began transmitting energy to Hydro One Networks, the largest electricity transmission and distribution company in Ontario, on September 30, 2009.
First Light I represents and important step in achieving Ontario’s renewable energy goals. This 90-acre installation is expected to generate more than 10 million kilowatt hours (kWhs) in its first year of operation:
- enough electricity to power approximately 1,000 homes in its first year of operation.
- equivalent of taking almost 1,800 cars off the road
- responsible for removing 8,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere
During construction of First Light, SunEdison worked closely with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources to successfully preserve habitat for the endangered Eastern Loggerhead Shrike.
